Aalsmeer is where my grandfather lived all his life and worked for more than 50 years cultivating orchids. For 6 weeks during my summer holidays as a young child I would go there and he would let me help looking after the orchids. I had a strong connection with my grandfather and its through this family bond that my love for gardening developed.
Now I grow many orchids on Bonaire in my garden. I attach them to the trees in coconut husks. The semi-tropical climate suits them well and I have my tricks to get them to flower. But They have to be out of reach of the geckos because as much as I love to admire them, they will have them for lunch.
